The Ultimate Cafetière Brew Guide: Full-Bodied Coffee Made Simple

If you're after a simple, reliable way to brew rich, full-bodied coffee at home, the cafetière (also known as French press) might just be your perfect match. This timeless brewing method doesn’t require any filters or fancy kit, and it brings out the deeper, more rounded flavours in your coffee.

Here’s how to get the best from your cafetière using Moon Roast coffee.

What You’ll Need

  • A cafetière/French press (350ml or larger)

  • Fresh Moon Roast coffee, ideally whole bean

  • Burr grinder (we recommend grinding fresh for best results)

  • Kettle

  • Scales or tablespoon

  • Timer

  • Stirrer (a wooden spoon or chopstick works well)

Our Recommended Recipe

Coffee: 60g per litre (a good way to remember this is one heaped tablespoon per serving amount + an extra one 'for the pot')
Water: 500ml, just off the boil (around 94°C)
Grind size: Coarse, like breadcrumbs
Brew time: 4 minutes

Step-by-Step

  1. Weigh and grind your coffee Coarse grind is key here. Too fine, and you’ll end up with silty, over-extracted coffee. A proper burr grinder makes all the difference.

  2. Boil your water Let it cool slightly for 30 seconds once boiled. Pour a little into your cafetière and swirl to warm it up, then discard that water.

  3. Add coffee to the cafetière Add your 30g of freshly ground Moon Roast coffee to the empty, warmed cafetière.

  4. Pour and stir Start your timer. Pour 500ml of hot water evenly over the grounds. Let it sit for 30 seconds, then give it a gentle stir to ensure all the grounds are wet.

  5. Let it steep Put the lid on but don’t plunge just yet. Leave it to brew for a total of 4 minutes. Before plunging, break the crust that has formed with a spoon and skim off any floating debris.

  6. Plunge and serve After 7 minutes, slowly press the plunger down. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Pro Tips for a Better Brew

  • Use freshly roasted coffee – Try our House Blends or a smooth single origin like our Brazil.

  • Grind fresh – A burr grinder will improve every brew. Check out our grinders.

  • Don’t let it sit too long – Leaving coffee in the cafetière too long after plunging can make it taste bitter.

Why We Love It

Cafetière coffee is rich, comforting, and easy to make. It brings out deeper chocolatey or nutty notes and works beautifully with milk, though it’s just as enjoyable black. It’s a brilliant everyday brew method and ideal for serving a crowd.

If you’re new to specialty coffee or just want a no-fuss way to enjoy it at home, this is a great place to start.
