Kenyan Coffee: What Makes It So Special?
Kenya is home to some of the most vibrant, fruit-forward coffees in the world. If you love a cup bursting with juicy acidity, deep sweetness, and layered flavours, Kenyan coffee is one to explore.
At Moon Roast, we’re always excited when fresh crops from Kenya arrive. There’s something about the bold blackcurrant notes, crisp citrus acidity, and wine-like richness that makes every brew stand out. So, what makes Kenyan coffee so unique, and why is it such a favourite among specialty coffee lovers?
Why Does Kenyan Coffee Taste So Good?
Kenya’s coffee-growing conditions are near perfect - high altitudes, rich volcanic soil, and careful processing all contribute to the incredible flavour profile.
1. High-Altitude Growing = Bold Flavour
Kenyan coffee is grown at 1,400–2,200m above sea level, where cooler temperatures slow the bean’s development. This extended growing period allows the sugars and acids to develop fully, leading to sweet, complex, and lively coffees.

2. The Famous SL Varieties
Kenya’s coffee plants are unique too. The most well-known varieties, SL28 and SL34, were developed specifically for Kenya’s climate and are known for their big acidity, deep fruit flavours, and crisp clarity. That signature blackcurrant-like tang you often find in Kenyan coffee? It’s all thanks to these varieties.

3. Washed Processing for Clean, Crisp Notes
Nearly all Kenyan coffee is washed (wet-processed), meaning the fruit is carefully removed before fermentation and drying. This process enhances clarity and brightness, bringing out those clean, juicy flavours Kenyan coffee is known for.
What Does Kenyan Coffee Taste Like?
Kenyan coffee is bold, bright, and complex. Expect flavours like:
- Blackcurrant & berry compote
- Citrus zest & tropical fruit
- Floral notes & crisp acidity
It’s the kind of coffee that dances on your palate, making every sip an experience. If you love coffees with big personality and vibrant fruitiness, Kenyan beans are a must-try.
