Introducing Bukonzo Dream: A Taste of the Rwenzori Mountains

We’re excited to share with you our latest offering, Bukonzo Dream, a truly exceptional coffee from the lush slopes of Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains. This coffee is particularly special to us, and it’s a place that holds a deep connection for our Head Roaster, Dan.

In 2022, Dan had the unique opportunity to visit the Rwenzori Mountains, a region renowned not just for its breathtaking scenery but also for its rich coffee heritage. The Rwenzori range, often referred to as the "Mountains of the Moon," stretches along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is home to some of the highest peaks in Africa. The area is characterised by its dramatic landscapes—towering mountains, deep valleys, and verdant forests—that provide a unique and ideal environment for growing coffee.

 

 

The Unique Terroir of the Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori Mountains are known for their rich, fertile volcanic soils and the diverse microclimates created by the varying altitudes. Coffee farms are typically found on steep slopes, where the altitude ranges from 1,200 to over 2,200 metres above sea level. This high elevation, combined with the cool, misty climate and abundant rainfall, creates the perfect conditions for producing high-quality Arabica coffee.

In this region, coffee cultivation is often carried out by smallholder farmers who have been growing coffee for generations. The traditional methods of cultivation, passed down through families, are complemented by modern practices introduced by organisations like Agri Evolve, which work to improve both the quality and sustainability of the coffee produced.

The Coffee of the Rwenzori: A Distinctive Profile

The typical coffee grown in the Rwenzori region is Arabica, known for its complex flavour profiles and high acidity. The unique terroir of the Rwenzori Mountains imparts distinctive characteristics to the coffee, often resulting in beans with bright acidity, floral notes, and a rich, full-bodied flavour. Bukonzo Dream is a perfect example of this, offering vibrant flavour notes of honeydew melon, pear, and wine gums—a reflection of the region's natural abundance and the careful processing techniques employed by the local farmers.

Supporting Local Communities

The coffee mill that processes Bukonzo Dream is a recent development, thanks to the efforts of Agri Evolve, a profit-for-purpose organisation that works closely with farmers across the Rwenzori region. Their mission is to build infrastructure, enhance coffee quality, and improve the livelihoods of farmers, their families, and the wider community. Through these efforts, they’re not only helping to produce outstanding coffee but also making a tangible impact on the quality of life in the region.
