From bean to cup: the journey of your coffee

Every cup of coffee tells a story from where the beans are grown, to how they’re roasted, to the moment you take your first sip. At Moon Roast, we’re passionate about sharing that journey with you, so you can appreciate not just the taste, but the craft and care behind every cup.

The origin - where it all begins

Coffee starts its life as a cherry, growing on coffee plants in the ‘coffee belt’ - the tropical regions around the equator. Countries like Ethiopia, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, and Guatemala are known for producing world-class beans, each with its own flavour profile shaped by altitude, soil, and climate.

  • Ethiopian beans: Floral and fruity
  • Colombian beans: Crisp and balanced
  • Brazilian beans: Rich and chocolatey
  • Peruvian beans: Sweet and mellow

Moon Roast works closely with trusted producers to source high-quality, ethically grown beans, ensuring fair prices for farmers and exceptional coffee for you.

Harvesting and processing

Once ripe, the coffee cherries are hand-picked or machine harvested. The beans inside the cherries are then extracted using one of two main methods:

  • Washed process - for a cleaner, brighter flavour
  • Natural process - for a fuller, fruiter taste

The choice of processing method has a huge impact on the final cup’s flavour notes.

The Roast - where magic happens

After being dried and shipped, green coffee beans arrive at our Hampshire roastery. Here’s where the transformation begins. Roasting develops the beans’ aroma, flavour and body, turning them from pale green to rich brown.

At Moon Roast, we roast in small batches, carefully adjusting temperature and timing to bring out the best in each bean. Whether you prefer a light roast with delicate acidity or a dark roast with bold depth, this stage is where personality is crafted.

Grinding and Brewing

The grind size matters: a fine grind suits espresso, while a coarser grind works best for cafetière or filter coffee. Using the right grind and brew method ensures you capture the full flavour potential of the beans.

When you brew at home, you’re tasting the result of months (sometimes years) of hard work, from farmer to roaster.
