This boozy and beautiful coffee has a uniquely delicious taste due to it's unusual process, anaerobic fermentation. We love the distinctly festive flavours of this coffee, perfectly warming for these dark chilly days.

Bale Mountain Farm is located in Arsi, in the Bale Mountains belt. This region forms the SE of the Ethiopian Highlands, just below 3,000 masl. The farm itself is located at 1,800 - 2,100 masl and employs 350 staff at the Dry MiIl and nearby Solena Washing Station. It is an idyllic location, extremely hard to reach by road and surrounded by two large rivers that flow to the Wabe Shebelle River and Forest Mountains. The coffee collected from the farm is notably dense and uniform, consistently delivering a high-quality cup profile. Bale Mountain farm is also engaged in social responsibility activities like local road construction, nursery establishment and free distribution of coffee seedlings, school building and financial support during the off season. Kerchanshe helps the Bale Mountain Farm communities to be a productive and positive place to live and work. The anaerobic fermentation in this lot highlights the acidity and fruity notes usually found in Bale Mountain coffees.

Widely considered the birthplace of coffee, 98% of Ethiopian coffee is still produced by smallholder farmers today. The nuances across producers, variety, and landscape means Ethiopia is widely considered as one of the most exciting and delicious origins in the world. Israel Degfa comes from a family of coffee producers and still owns and operates a few private farms today. In addition, he is the owner of the Ethiopian export company Kerchanshe and also a shareholder at our importer, Kamba Coffee. The term ‘vertical integration’ is one that is used a lot in specialty coffee, but our sourcing strategy in Ethiopia is exactly that.

Israel and his team at Kerchanshe own a variety of mills, washing stations and private farms across the coffee producing regions of Ethiopia. Kamba primarily works with Israel in Sidamo, Guji and Yirgacheffe. Since Israel is involved across the full supply chain, a percentage of the revenue that these coffees are sold for by Kamba is reinvested in Kerchanshe and the Ethiopian coffee community. This enables  Kamba to work together with Kerchanshe and the contributing smallholders to develop quality and support projects and producers across Ethiopia.
